Irlen Syndrome Awareness Week

What is Irlen Syndrome?

Irlen Syndrome is a problem many people have processing visual information – it is not a problem with vision itself, but with the processing of the information we receive through our eyes.

Signs and sympoms

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Reading problems
  • Writing problems
  • Discomfort – headaches, nausea, fatigue, restless
  • Attention and concentration problems
  • Problems with depth perception

These are pretty vague (much more detail can be found on irlen.com). For a clearer picture of the symptoms watch the video below:

I personally find it amazing (and somewhat disconcerting) that many people suffer from this for so long, experiencing many difficulties and low self-esteem as a result – especially as it is so easy to remedy. A friend of mine has a daughter with Irlens Syndrome, who once diagnosed, suddenly blossomed in many aspects of her life. My friend then became a screener and is finding Irlens is fairly common. You can find her if you search for Irlen Screener on Facebook.

Please visit the official Irlen Syndrome website for more information (irlen.com), especially if you think any of the above may apply to you.
