Lower leg muscles
Tibialis anterior
This muscle is located on the front of the shin. It pulls the toes and the foot towards the shin (ankle dorsi flexion).
Gastrocnemius and soleus (underneath)
These muscles are located on the back of the lower leg. They straighten the ankle joint (ankle plantar flexion), allowing an individual to stand on their toes or point their toes forward. The gastrocnemius also helps to bend the knees (knee flexion).
